Zocdoc Expands Healthcare Booking Infrastructure to Third Parties

Online medical appointment scheduler Zocdoc is expanding its Care Access Network, allowing its underlying infrastructure to power appointment booking for other platforms. This initiative aims to address significant friction points in accessing healthcare, where the average wait time for a physician appointment is approximately 31 days. Zocdoc CEO and founder Oliver Kharraz likens the current state of healthcare booking to a blockage, stating, "In travel, you book; in retail, you buy; in healthcare, you’re blocked." He envisions Zocdoc building a universal access layer for healthcare, similar to those found in travel and retail industries.

Several prominent platforms are integrating Zocdoc's scheduling feature, which allows users to view and book available appointments with local clinicians, filterable by accepted insurance plans. These include Yelp, Healthgrades, and Amazon Health AI, the latter of which will leverage Zocdoc's technology for nationwide appointment booking. Blue Shield of California, which began piloting the network in 2023, is also adopting the feature. Additionally, the Veterans Health Administration is partnering with Wellhive to utilize the system, a collaboration that originated in 2023. Since July, users of Google Gemini have been able to book appointments directly within the AI tool through Zocdoc's integration.

Zocdoc, co-founded by Kharraz in 2007, has invested years in expanding its network of doctors and developing the technical capabilities to connect its tools with various doctors' scheduling software. The company has built a provider network of 200,000 providers across the United States, a scale Kharraz describes as "critical mass," largely achieved over the past five years. Since 2023, Zocdoc's provider network has experienced a compound annual growth rate of 50%, indicating significant expansion. This infrastructure rollout marks a new growth phase for Zocdoc, with executives observing "many of the opportunities of scale for the first time."

The expansion of Zocdoc's Care Access Network signifies a strategic shift for the company, moving beyond its direct-to-consumer platform to become a foundational technology provider for the broader healthcare ecosystem. By enabling other digital health platforms and service providers to offer seamless appointment booking, Zocdoc aims to increase patient access to care and reduce administrative burdens for healthcare providers. This move positions Zocdoc to capture a larger share of the digital health market by leveraging its established technology and provider relationships.
