She penned the lyrics at the tender age of 16 or 17 in her bedroom in Basingstoke, England, as a coping mechanism while studying for her A-levels, a significant academic hurdle in the UK education system. The initial lyrical spark involved the phrase “Twist in my…” which she experimented with, even considering “Twist in my gravity” before ultimately landing on “sobriety.”

Tikaram explained that the song captures the intense feelings of a young person grappling with the perceived injustices of the world and the actions of adults.
