Valve Releases Official Windows Drivers for Steam Machine

Valve released official Windows drivers for the Steam Machine this week, a move that simplifies the process of installing Microsoft's operating system on the gaming console. While this update allows users to run Windows, Valve's own SteamOS is still reported to offer superior gaming performance. The drivers are available for download on Valve's support website, enabling users to bypass previous workarounds that were necessary for Windows installation.

This development addresses a long-standing request from a segment of the Steam Machine user base who preferred to run Windows applications and games not supported by SteamOS. The Steam Machine, first launched in 2015, was designed as a competitor to traditional PCs and consoles, offering a living room-friendly gaming experience. However, its adoption was limited, and Valve has since shifted its focus towards the Steam Deck handheld gaming device.

Despite the availability of Windows drivers, early reports suggest that SteamOS continues to provide a more optimized gaming experience. This is likely due to the tight integration between SteamOS and Valve's gaming software, including the Proton compatibility layer which allows many Windows games to run on Linux-based systems. Users installing Windows will need to acquire their own Windows license and installation media.

The release of these drivers does not signify a renewed push for the Steam Machine hardware itself, but rather a commitment to supporting the existing user base and their hardware choices. Valve's primary hardware efforts are now concentrated on the Steam Deck, which has seen considerable success since its launch in February 2022.
