Xinjiang Chief Touts Trade, Diplomacy as Hormuz Disruption Bites

Xinjiang's top official, Erkin Tuniyaz, is promoting the region as a vital trade and diplomatic hub for China, aiming to attract investment and foster closer ties with Central Asian and European nations. This initiative gains prominence as disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz increasingly highlight the strategic importance of overland trade routes. Tuniyaz met with representatives from 10 countries, including Pakistan, Kazakhstan, and Turkey, in Urumqi this week, emphasizing Xinjiang's role in the Belt and Road Initiative. He highlighted the region's logistical advantages and its potential to serve as a bridge connecting China to global markets via rail and road networks. The discussions focused on expanding trade volumes, enhancing infrastructure connectivity, and strengthening diplomatic relations, particularly in light of global shipping uncertainties. Xinjiang has seen a significant increase in trade with Central Asian countries, with its imports and exports reaching $10.4 billion in the first quarter of 2024, a 47% year-on-year increase, according to the Urumqi Customs. The region is also investing heavily in its transportation infrastructure, including the development of new rail lines and logistics centers, to further facilitate trade.
