Xiaomi Names New EREV Brand Sky Nomad

Xiaomi officially confirmed the name of its new extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) initiative as "Sky Nomad," following months of speculation. This strategic move positions Xiaomi directly against established players in China's competitive family SUV market, notably Li Auto and Huawei-backed Aito.

The inaugural model under the Sky Nomad brand is slated to be a full-size SUV. This vehicle is projected to achieve a combined range exceeding 1,500 kilometers (approximately 932 miles). This substantial range capability aims to address consumer concerns about electric vehicle infrastructure and charging availability in China.

The introduction of Sky Nomad signifies Xiaomi's ambitious expansion into the automotive sector. The company has been investing heavily in its automotive division, with the goal of becoming a significant force in the global EV market. The EREV technology, which combines electric propulsion with a small gasoline generator for extended range, is a key strategy for capturing market share in segments where long-distance travel is common.

Xiaomi's entry into this segment intensifies competition, particularly with Li Auto, which has built its success on EREV SUVs. Huawei's involvement with Aito also presents a formidable challenge.
