Xavi Appointed Netherlands Head Coach

Xavi Hernández, widely known as Xavi, has been appointed as the new head coach of the Netherlands men's national football team. The former FC Barcelona manager has signed a four-year contract, committing him to the role through the 2028 European Championship and potentially the 2026 FIFA World Cup. This appointment marks a significant moment in the team's history, as Xavi becomes the first non-Dutch individual to manage the Netherlands since Rinus Michels, a Dutch national, took charge in 1978. Michels, often regarded as the father of 'Total Football,' had a distinguished career managing the Oranje, including leading them to the 1974 World Cup final.

Xavi's managerial career began at FC Barcelona's youth academy, where he coached the U19 team. He then moved to Qatar to manage Al Sadd, leading them to win the Qatar Stars League title in the 2020-21 season. His most prominent role was managing FC Barcelona from November 2021 to May 2024. During his tenure at Barcelona, he secured the Copa del Rey in the 2022-23 season and the Supercopa de España in the 2022-23 season. Despite these successes, his time at the helm of the Catalan club ended with his dismissal following a disappointing 2023-24 La Liga campaign where Barcelona finished second to Real Madrid.

The Netherlands national team, known as 'Oranje,' has a rich footballing heritage, having reached three World Cup finals (1974, 1978, 2010) and winning the European Championship once in 1988. The team's previous coach, Ronald Koeman, stepped down in January 2024 to take over Barcelona, leaving the position vacant. The Dutch Football Association (KNVB) sought a high-profile figure with extensive playing and coaching experience to lead the team into its next era.
