UK Arts Women Report Unequal Opportunities and Bias

Women in the United Kingdom's arts sector overwhelmingly feel they do not have equal opportunities for roles, particularly as they age, according to a new report. The research indicates a pervasive industry fixation on "young and emerging" talent, contributing to a challenging environment for female professionals. The survey, which polled 76 arts professionals, found that nearly all respondents (95%) believed gender inequality persists within the sector. Furthermore, a significant majority, three-quarters (75%), reported experiencing either unconscious bias or outright sexism in their careers. These experiences highlight systemic issues that may be hindering career progression and fair representation.

The report also sheds light on the impact of age on career success for women in the arts. More than two-thirds (69%) of women surveyed felt that their age negatively affected their career trajectory. This sentiment was even more pronounced among those working in artistic roles compared to managerial positions. Specifically, 100% of women in artistic roles reported that age was a detrimental factor in their professional advancement. This suggests that the industry's focus on youth is not confined to entry-level positions but extends to established artists, potentially limiting opportunities for experienced professionals.
