Gulf Coast Tropical Depression May Become Storm Bertha

Tropical Depression Two formed in the Gulf Coast off Florida on Monday morning, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC) at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Located 110 miles south of Panama City, Florida, the depression was moving northwest at 3 mph with maximum sustained winds of 35 mph. Forecasters anticipate gradual strengthening, with potential for tropical storm conditions to affect the Gulf Coast from the Florida Panhandle to southeastern Louisiana between late Monday and Tuesday. Should it develop into a tropical storm, it would be named Bertha, marking the second named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season. A Storm Surge Watch has been issued for the coasts of Alabama, Mississippi, and southeastern Louisiana, warning of possible life-threatening storm surge. Residents in Louisiana and Texas are advised to monitor the system's progress, as additional watches may be required for parts of those areas later on Monday or Tuesday. The NOAA also indicated that areas of flash flooding are possible through Friday along the Gulf Coast and adjacent inland locations, stretching from western Florida to the Middle Texas Coast, including southern portions of Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. This storm surge is expected to bring heavy rainfall and high winds to coastal areas of Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana, as reported by USA Today.

Concurrently, the NHC is monitoring a second system in the Pacific Ocean. Tropical Storm Fausto is strengthening and is projected to become a hurricane in the near future. As of Monday morning, Fausto was situated near the southern tip of Baja California, traveling west-northwest at 13 mph with maximum sustained winds. The NHC is issuing advisories for this system as well, highlighting its development and potential impact.
