Google's AI Overviews Boost Search Usage

Google reported that its AI Overviews feature, initially launched in May 2024, has driven a more than 10% increase in search engine usage in its largest markets, including the U.S. and India, for queries that display these AI-generated summaries. The company states that these generative AI features have led to increased user satisfaction and more frequent use of its search engine. This development occurs as major tech companies, including Microsoft and Meta Platforms, have been rapidly integrating artificial intelligence across their services following the public debut of OpenAI's ChatGPT. However, these platforms have encountered criticism from both users and competitors regarding what is perceived as an aggressive implementation of AI features. DuckDuckGo, a competitor to Google, has positioned itself by offering an AI-free version of its search engine. Kamyl Bazbaz, chief communications and policy officer for DuckDuckGo, stated that the company did not want to implement AI by forcing publishers or users to consent. Following Google's announcement of an upgrade to its search with Gemini 3.5 Flash in May, DuckDuckGo observed a 30% week-over-week increase in U.S. installs, with install levels remaining approximately 30% higher than pre-announcement figures.
