Wildfires Force 80,000 Evacuations in France and Spain

Wildfires raged out of control in southwestern France and central Spain on Friday, leading to the evacuation of approximately 80,000 individuals from their homes. In France, the touristic Cap Ferret peninsula on the Atlantic coast saw residents flee by boat as flames consumed around 100 square kilometers (38 square miles) of land since Wednesday. This area, located near Bordeaux, is known for its scenic landscapes, oyster-farming villages, and upscale resorts. More than 60,000 residents in France were evacuated from the affected region. Both France and Spain have requested assistance from other European Union member states to help manage the escalating situation.

Over 20,000 people had already been evacuated from towns and vacation spots on Thursday. The latest evacuations were conducted via road, with boat services arranged for those unable to evacuate using their own transportation. An unprecedented operation saw around 1,500 people who fled the Cap Ferret peninsula arrive by sea in the city of Arcachon. These individuals were transported on various vessels, including small water taxis and larger boats operated by professionals. Local authorities established a reception center to provide essential support such as coffee, fruit, and water, with some early arrivals sleeping on the floor.

Hundreds of firefighters are actively engaged in combating the blazes, and additional ground and aerial reinforcements were dispatched on Friday. The EU has committed to providing support to the affected countries. Concurrently, another significant wildfire was burning further south along the coast, remaining uncontained due to strong winds that hampered firefighting efforts. Authorities suspect that both fires were accidental in origin. France's Interior Minister Laurent Nunez stated that 40,000 people have been evacuated in France.
