Why Relocation Costs Skyrocket—and the Tech Fixing It

The cost of relocation, whether for individuals or large organizations like NASA, often far exceeds initial estimates due to unforeseen complexities and logistical challenges. NASA's International Space Station (ISS) program, initially projected to cost $8 billion in 1984, ultimately surpassed $100 billion by the time it became fully operational. This cost escalation mirrors personal moving experiences, where underestimated time, supplies, and budget lead to final bills that can nearly double the initial quote, according to Bill Mulholland, CEO of Agoyu. Mulholland explains that local moves are typically priced by time, while interstate moves are based on weight, and international moves are calculated by the volume of goods in shipping containers. For instance, an average local move for a two- or three-bedroom home might cost around $1,250, whereas a long-distance move for a similar-sized home can be significantly more expensive, highlighting the variability in moving expenses.
