Proprietary Data Boosts AI Citation Value

Publishing original numbers derived from a business's own operations is the most reliable way to enhance a page's originality and defensibility for AI citation. This approach surpasses outdated methods like commissioning surveys loosely tied to a product. Nearly every product now generates valuable data that can be easily extracted without requiring a dedicated research team, significantly lowering the barrier to entry for creating unique content.
On-Page.ai's recent "information gain" study analyzed 150 top-performing Google pages across 50 keywords and 10 verticals. The study scored these pages on how much unique meaning they contributed beyond their ranking competitors, with scores ranging from 0 to 100. Original data demonstrated the strongest correlation with these originality scores, outperforming even page length. Pages featuring up to one unique figure averaged an information gain score of 40.2, while those with 15 or more unique figures averaged 62.1, with scores increasing progressively at each interval.
The study revealed that outperforming top-ranking pages in Google search may require minimal original evidence. The average top organic result contains only about 4 unique data points. Therefore, publishing a page with more than 4 original claims, figures, or answers can provide a significant advantage for organic visibility. Furthermore, the analysis identified numerous unanswered questions closely related to search topics that present opportunities for new pages to stand out by providing novel answers.
