Why Newcastle have signed a 'giant' from French second tier

Newcastle United signed Ewen Jaouen on March 18, 2024, completing a transfer from French second-tier club Stade de Reims. The 18-year-old goalkeeper underwent a medical examination prior to finalizing his move to St. James' Park. Jaouen, standing at 6 feet 7 inches tall, is considered a significant prospect and joins Newcastle's academy setup. He made 10 appearances for Stade de Reims' B team in the Championnat National 3 during the 2023-24 season, conceding 13 goals and keeping 3 clean sheets. His previous club experience includes time with FC Lorient's youth system. The transfer fee was not disclosed by either club. Jaouen's arrival is seen as a strategic investment in the club's future goalkeeping talent.
