WHO Declares Cruise Hantavirus Outbreak Officially Over

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the hantavirus outbreak linked to a cruise ship officially over on May 15, 2024. This declaration came after the final individual exposed to the virus completed their mandatory 42-day quarantine period and subsequently tested negative for hantavirus. The outbreak was initially identified in March 2024, with several passengers and crew members falling ill after disembarking from the cruise.

Hantavirus is a rare but serious respiratory disease transmitted by infected rodents. In this specific outbreak, the source was traced to contaminated dust and debris in a storage area on the cruise ship, which became aerosolized. Passengers and crew members who were in close proximity to this area were considered at risk. The WHO, in collaboration with national health authorities, initiated contact tracing and monitoring protocols for all potentially exposed individuals.

During the outbreak investigation, a total of 15 individuals were identified as having had potential exposure to the virus. These individuals were placed under quarantine and closely monitored for symptoms. The incubation period for hantavirus can range from 1 to 8 weeks, necessitating the extended quarantine period to ensure no further transmission occurred. All 15 individuals have now completed their quarantine and have tested negative, confirming the absence of active infection within the group.

The WHO commended the swift response and collaborative efforts of the ship's operator and the relevant public health agencies in managing the situation. The organization emphasized the importance of maintaining vigilance against infectious disease outbreaks, particularly in travel-related settings. While this specific outbreak has been contained, the WHO continues to monitor global health risks and provide guidance on prevention and control measures for zoonotic diseases.
