White House Seeks Penn Station Name Change

The White House has officially requested that U.S. Senators consider renaming Penn Station in New York City as part of an $8 billion redesign project. U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy sent a letter this week to senators seeking congressional funding approval for the transit hub's rehabilitation and other transportation priorities. While the letter did not specify a new name, Duffy has previously expressed openness to renaming the station after President Donald Trump, stating last summer that "I think that has a nice ring to it." Trump's spokesperson, Karoline Leavitt, also responded positively to the idea earlier this year, asking "Why not?"

President Trump has sought to enhance his legacy through public works projects, including a proposed White House ballroom and a triumphal arch. This potential name change follows the recent renaming of Palm Beach International Airport in Florida to President Donald J. Trump International Airport. Trump himself has acknowledged that the idea of a name change was discussed in conversations with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York, though Trump has denied suggesting it as a condition for unfreezing federal funding for the Gateway project, a significant rail tunnel initiative under the Hudson River.

Penn Station, a critical transit hub and the busiest in the western hemisphere, is slated for a substantial $8 billion overhaul. The project aims to modernize the aging and often criticized underground facility. The transportation agency spokespersons confirmed the existence of Duffy's letter but did not provide further details or respond to follow-up questions regarding the potential name change.
