Artist's Device Increases Bike Resistance When Housing is Unaffordable

Artist and technologist Justin Blinder developed a device called Ground Truth that increases the resistance on a stationary bicycle when local housing becomes less affordable. Blinder conceived of Ground Truth in 2020, a period marked by his own layoff and the impending COVID-19 lockdown, which led him to work for food delivery apps. This experience of precarious employment and observing economic disparities directly influenced his artistic and technological pursuits.

The Ground Truth device connects to a stationary bicycle and uses real-time data to adjust the magnetic resistance. The core concept is to create a tangible, physical consequence for abstract economic indicators. When housing prices rise relative to local incomes, making housing less affordable, the device increases the pedaling difficulty. Conversely, as housing affordability improves, the resistance lessens.
