Western Europe Records Hottest June in History

Western Europe recorded its hottest June ever, according to data from the European Union’s Copernicus Earth observation program. The average temperature across the region for June was 20.74 degrees Celsius (approximately 69.3 degrees Fahrenheit). This new record surpasses the previous hottest June, which occurred in 2025, by a significant margin, exceeding the historical average for the month by over 3 degrees Celsius. The data also indicates that ocean temperatures globally reached their highest recorded levels, with June's global average temperature only 0.01 degrees Celsius shy of the all-time record.

These record-breaking temperatures are part of a broader pattern of accumulating heat within the Earth's climate system, as stated by Samantha Burgess, deputy director of the Copernicus Climate Change Service. She emphasized that this trend leads to more frequent and intense heatwaves, persistently warm oceans, and escalating risks for human populations, ecosystems, and critical infrastructure throughout Europe and beyond. The recent heatwave in late June followed similar spikes in May and preceded further high temperatures in July, highlighting a consistent period of extreme weather.

Experts from the World Weather Attribution initiative noted that such extreme conditions would have been exceedingly rare 50 years ago. They attribute the increasing frequency and intensity of these events to climate change, which is establishing a new, hazardous norm. European systems, many of which were not designed for current temperature extremes, are being severely tested. Carolina Pereira Marghidan of the Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre highlighted that many individuals continue to live and work in environments ill-equipped for present temperatures, underscoring the urgent need for increased investment in heat-resilient housing, urban planning, and infrastructure to ensure public safety.
