West Marine, Inc. filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on May 17, initiating a restructuring process that includes the closure of 59 retail locations. The company, founded in 1968, had grown to become the largest U.S. retailer of boating and marine supplies, operating over 200 stores across 34 states and Puerto Rico prior to the filing. The decision to close more than a quarter of its stores is a direct consequence of the bankruptcy proceedings. West Marine cited "supply chain disruptions, extreme weather events, and shifts in consumer behavior" as primary reasons for its financial distress in a press release. The company explained that inflationary pressures and economic concerns have led consumers to reduce discretionary spending on recreational activities, impacting sales of boating and fishing equipment. Despite these challenges, West Marine emphasized that it is not ceasing operations and will continue to function during its restructuring phase. The bankruptcy filing aims to allow the company to reorganize its finances and operations to ensure its long-term viability.
