Wildfire Smoke Disrupts MLB, MLS Games

Wildfire smoke originating from Canada and northern Minnesota significantly impacted professional sports schedules in the United States on Thursday, leading to air quality warnings and game adjustments. The Major League Baseball (MLB) game between the New York Mets and the Philadelphia Phillies in Philadelphia was rescheduled to start an hour earlier, at 6:10 p.m. EDT, due to concerns over air quality. This adjustment affected the only MLB game scheduled following the week's All-Star break. Additionally, a Major League Soccer (MLS) game in Chicago was postponed entirely because of the hazardous air conditions.

The smoke created heavy, pungent conditions that darkened skies from the Great Lakes region to parts of the East Coast, severely reducing visibility. Many city officials advised residents to remain indoors or wear masks when outdoors, as air quality levels reached "unhealthy to hazardous" classifications. These levels indicate that the air is unsafe for everyone, irrespective of pre-existing health conditions. The National Weather Service attributed the persistent smoke to a high-pressure system trapping it near the ground.

Athletes expressed reservations about competing under such conditions. Phillies first baseman Bryce Harper commented to ESPN during the game's broadcast, "It's definitely different. Not the greatest idea, I guess, to come out here and play in this type of weather, but we're doing it." Following the Mets' 4-1 victory, interim manager Andy Green stated that the conditions did not significantly affect the game, though he acknowledged that visibility worsened, making it difficult for him to track pop-ups. Phillies manager Don Mattingly noted that tracking fly balls became more challenging later in the game, describing the visibility as "foggy conditions more than the air quality."

This marks the second instance this season that wildfire smoke has disrupted a game in Philadelphia. The severity of the smoke led to widespread health advisories, urging caution for outdoor activities and highlighting the growing environmental challenges affecting public life and major events.
