Waymo and Uber End Phoenix Partnership

Waymo and Uber confirmed this week that their autonomous vehicle partnership in Phoenix has concluded after nearly three years. This collaboration, initiated in November 2020, allowed Uber riders in the Phoenix metropolitan area to book rides in Waymo's self-driving vehicles through the Uber app. The companies stated that the partnership was a pilot program designed to explore integration possibilities.

The initial agreement aimed to provide a new transportation option for consumers and gather data on the integration of autonomous vehicles into existing ride-sharing networks. Waymo, Google's self-driving car project, has been operating its fully autonomous ride-hailing service in Phoenix since 2018. Uber, a major player in the traditional ride-sharing market, sought to incorporate autonomous technology into its platform.

While the companies did not provide specific reasons for the partnership's termination, they indicated that the pilot phase had run its course. Both Waymo and Uber continue to operate independently in the Phoenix market. Waymo maintains its own ride-hailing service, while Uber continues to offer rides with human drivers and has explored other autonomous vehicle initiatives in different markets. The end of this specific integration does not preclude future collaborations or independent advancements in the autonomous driving sector for either company.
