Reagan National Airport Plans $835 Million Terminal 1 Expansion

Washington, DC's Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) is planning a significant expansion project valued at an estimated $835 million in 2025, aimed at replacing the aging Terminal 1 concourse and rotunda. The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA), which oversees DCA, released environmental documents in July detailing the proposal for a new nine-gate concourse, officially designated as the "Terminal 1 Replacement Gates Facility." This new structure is set to replace the existing midcentury concourse and rotunda, locally nicknamed "the banjo" due to its distinctive shape, which dates back to 1970. The project also includes the construction of a new "processor" building designed to handle check-in and baggage claim operations. According to MWAA financial documents, these new facilities could be operational as early as 2031. Southwest Airlines, a primary user of Terminal 1, is expected to be the main airline utilizing the new concourse, alongside Air Canada and Frontier Airlines. A spokesperson for Southwest Airlines expressed anticipation for the project's completion and confirmed the airline's collaboration with the airport authority. An MWAA spokesperson declined to provide further comment on the expansion plans. This upgrade to DCA follows closely on the heels of another major renovation, "Project Journey," which concluded just five years prior. Project Journey involved a $1 billion investment and resulted in the addition of a new 14-gate concourse, known as the E Gates, which replaced the inconvenient Gate 35X. That expansion also incorporated two new security checkpoints, enabling the relocation of the National Hall main concourse to an area within security. The current Terminal 1 expansion aims to fundamentally reorganize traveler flow within the older, original terminal building, which includes the historically landmarked 1941 terminal, distinguishing it from Terminal 2. In parallel, the MWAA is also advancing a substantial $22.5 billion redevelopment initiative for Dulles International Airport (IAD), another major airport serving the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. This ambitious IAD redevelopment has garnered support from the Trump administration and United Airlines, indicating a broader strategy to enhance air travel infrastructure in the region. The Terminal 1 expansion at DCA is crucial for improving passenger experience and operational efficiency at one of the nation's busiest airports, particularly for airlines heavily reliant on its facilities.
