Walmart Pulls Taylor Farms Salads Amid Cyclosporiasis Recall

Walmart Inc. announced on Saturday, June 8, 2024, that it has removed four bagged iceberg lettuce salad products manufactured by Taylor Farms from its shelves. These products are sold under Walmart's Marketside store brand and were distributed to select locations. The retailer stated that there have been no confirmed illnesses linked to these specific items, but the removal is a precautionary measure following notification from a supplier. This action is part of a broader recall effort that is expanding to include some U.S. retail stores.

The recalls are tied to a cyclosporiasis outbreak, a gastrointestinal illness caused by the microscopic parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), cyclosporiasis has infected people across 34 states. Taylor Farms had previously recalled products originating from a farm in Mexico that were distributed to 27 states.

Mexico's Health Ministry has stated that its government is collaborating with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in an ongoing investigation to pinpoint the source of the outbreak. Research institutions from Mexico's Health and Agriculture ministries are assisting the FDA with technical information exchange to mitigate health risks. The Mexican government emphasized that identifying a product's country of origin does not automatically confirm that contamination occurred within its territory.

Produce sales, particularly during the summer months, represent a significant portion of revenue for many companies. Product removals can potentially impact consumer demand for weeks or even months. The CDC has reported that cyclosporiasis infections have been identified in numerous states, with Michigan being one of them.
