Volvo Unveils New Sedan, EV Expectations Shift

Volvo has unveiled its new sedan, the EM90, a luxury electric minivan that marks the brand's re-entry into a segment it previously exited. However, initial expectations of a purely electric future for Volvo's sedan offerings may need recalibration, as the EM90 is based on a platform shared with the Zeekr 009, a Chinese market electric minivan. This shared architecture indicates that the EM90 will likely feature a powertrain similar to its counterpart, which includes a 116 kWh battery pack offering an estimated range of 702 kilometers (436 miles) on the CLTC cycle. The vehicle is powered by a single 200 kW (268 hp) electric motor, driving the rear wheels.

The EM90's design incorporates Volvo's signature Thor's Hammer headlights and a distinctive grille, aiming to blend Scandinavian minimalism with a modern aesthetic. Inside, the cabin is designed for luxury and comfort, featuring a 15.4-inch infotainment screen, a 21-speaker Bowers & Wilkins sound system, and ambient lighting. The interior can be configured for either six or seven occupants, with the six-seat version offering more premium seating options, including reclining seats with massage functions. The vehicle also boasts a 15.6-inch screen that can be lowered from the ceiling for rear-seat entertainment.

Volvo has positioned the EM90 as a "smart mobile space," emphasizing its versatility for work, relaxation, and social interaction. The vehicle's dimensions are substantial, measuring 5,209 mm (205.1 inches) in length, 2,024 mm (79.7 inches) in width, and 1,859 mm (73.2 inches) in height, with a wheelbase of 3,205 mm (126.2 inches). This makes it one of the larger vehicles in its class. The EM90 is built on the SEA (Sustainable Experience Architecture) platform, developed by Volvo's parent company, Geely, which also underpins other Geely Auto Group vehicles.

Pre-orders for the Volvo EM90 have opened in China, with deliveries expected to commence in March 2024. The initial pricing in China is set at 818,000 yuan (approximately $113,000 USD). While the EM90 is a fully electric vehicle, its introduction and platform sharing raise questions about Volvo's broader strategy for its sedan lineup in other global markets. The company has previously stated ambitions to become a fully electric car manufacturer by 2030, but the EM90's specific market positioning and shared platform suggest a nuanced approach to electrification, potentially prioritizing market-specific demands and leveraging existing group resources.
