Venice Film Festival Director Addresses Studio Gaps

Venice Film Festival artistic director Alberto Barbera revealed the lineup for the 83rd edition of the festival on Thursday, his 19th selection for the role. Barbera, who previously served from 1998 to 2001 and has been in his current tenure since 2012, had his term extended to 2027 and 2028 earlier this year. He described the selection as varied and politically engaged.

Barbera addressed the notable absence of films from major Hollywood studios, a trend he attributed to the studios' focus on their own streaming platforms and a desire to control distribution windows. He explained that studios are increasingly hesitant to commit films to festivals that might compete with their direct-to-consumer strategies. This situation has led to a lineup that leans more heavily on independent productions and international cinema.

Furthermore, Barbera commented on the scarcity of female directors in contention for the festival's top prize, the Golden Lion. He acknowledged this as a persistent issue within the film industry and stated that while the festival aims for diversity, the selection process is primarily driven by artistic merit. He expressed hope that more female filmmakers will submit compelling works in future editions.

Another point of discussion was the decision not to premiere Luca Guadagnino's latest film, 'Artificial,' at the Venice Film Festival. Barbera indicated that the film's distributor, Neon, opted against a festival debut, a choice he respected but found disappointing given the film's potential. He suggested that Neon may have had strategic reasons for bypassing the festival circuit for this particular project, possibly related to its release strategy or market positioning. The festival will proceed with its curated selection, aiming to showcase a broad spectrum of cinematic achievements.
