Venezuelan Man Dies in ICE Custody, 22nd Death This Year

Jesús Manuel Arenas-Silva, a 45-year-old Venezuelan national, died on Monday while in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). His death marks the 22nd fatality in ICE detention facilities this year. Arenas-Silva was arrested on the previous Thursday and had been held at the Irwin County Detention Center, a privately operated facility in Georgia. He was found unresponsive in a transport bus during a transfer to the Folkston ICE Processing Center. ICE stated that the suspected cause of death was cardiac arrest. The incident occurred this week, with ICE announcing the death on Wednesday. Arenas-Silva had been detained for less than a week prior to his death. The Irwin County Detention Center has previously faced scrutiny regarding conditions and detainee care. This event underscores ongoing concerns about the health and safety of individuals within federal immigration detention.
