Venezuela rocked by two huge earthquakes

Two major earthquakes, registering magnitudes of 7.0 and 6.8, struck Venezuela on January 23, 2024, causing widespread damage and prompting warnings of potential fatalities. The initial 7.0 magnitude quake occurred at 10:30 AM local time, with its epicenter located approximately 30 kilometers offshore from the coastal city of Cumana in Sucre state. A subsequent 6.8 magnitude aftershock followed just 30 minutes later, exacerbating the destruction in already affected areas. Reports from Cumana indicate significant structural damage to buildings, including the collapse of several multi-story apartment complexes. Emergency services are actively engaged in rescue operations, with initial assessments suggesting that numerous individuals may be trapped beneath the rubble. Communication lines have been severely disrupted, complicating rescue efforts and the assessment of the full extent of the disaster. The Venezuelan government has declared a state of emergency in the affected regions and has requested international assistance to aid in relief and recovery operations.
