Vacheron Constantin Unveils Animal Kingdom Watch Collection

Vacheron Constantin has unveiled the Métiers d’Art Tribute to the Animal Kingdom Collection, a series of six unique timepieces that celebrate artisanal craft and natural symbolism. Each watch serves as a canvas for traditional techniques such as engraving, enameling, embroidery, and marquetry, elevated into horological art. This collection underscores Vacheron Constantin's dedication to merging fine watchmaking with métiers d’art, offering collectors rare expressions of creativity and cultural storytelling. The collection includes models named Feathersnake, Glassoctopus, Oraygami, Tigerbroidery, Papercroc, and Woodenwings, each representing a distinct facet of the natural world through extraordinary craftsmanship.

The Feathersnake model features an amphibious serpent coiling through foliage, a design brought to life by micro-plumasserie specialist Julien Vermeulen. The dial of the Feathersnake is composed of delicate feather marquetry, utilizing over 200 tiny pieces derived from seven rare Lophophore feathers. These feathers are applied to silk paper, complemented by a 3D metal appliqué, to create a serpentine motif that conveys movement and texture with remarkable realism. This piece exemplifies the intricate work involved in combining natural materials with horological design.

The aquatic realm is explored through three distinct interpretations within the collection. The Glassoctopus watch showcases a transparent octopus sculpted from glass rods, meticulously crafted dot-by-dot using tungsten tools by artist Simone Crestani. This glass sculpture is set over a dark blue, hand-guilloché gold dial base, evoking the mystery of the deep sea. The Oraygami model delves into the aquatic world using paper, featuring six micro-origami manta rays. These rays are meticulously folded by Anja Midori from self-dyed Japanese paper and are mounted at varying heights on fine brass stems above a blue hand-guilloché surface, enhanced by a moiré-effect crystal, creating a sense of depth and movement.

Representing the land and sky, three additional timepieces in the collection demonstrate extreme miniaturization in textiles, paper, and wood. The Tigerbroidery watch captures a prowling tiger through intricate embroidery techniques. The Papercroc model likely utilizes paper-based artistry to depict a crocodile, while the Woodenwings timepiece would employ wood for its representation, possibly of a bird or insect. These watches collectively highlight the Maison’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of artisanal techniques in watchmaking, with each piece being a testament to the skill and dedication of the artisans involved.
