USA Today vs. Google AI Overviews: A World Cup battle for breaking news traffic

USA Today Co. is employing AI-assisted shell files to expedite the publication of breaking sports news, aiming to secure search traffic before Google's AI Overviews can summarize events. This strategy was initially tested during the 2026 Winter Olympics and is now being applied to coverage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, according to Digiday. The publisher pre-writes stories by creating automated shell files for anticipated breaking news events. These files are populated with subheads, photos, and links from the publisher's archives, with editors then refining this material into publishable drafts. Reporters can then add new details and update headlines for rapid dissemination. Alicia DelGallo, USA Today Sports editorial director, stated that the goal is to reduce reliance on SEO strategy, emphasizing the importance of pre-written content. The publisher aims to publish news while search interest is still growing, before Google can generate an AI Overview. Barry Adams, founder of Polemic Digital, noted that AI Overviews have appeared for news events within approximately four to twelve hours. During the 2026 Winter Olympics, USA Today's national and local network generated 116 million page views from January 1 to February 28, with the flagship USA Today site experiencing an 82% increase in page views compared to the 2022 Winter Olympics, reaching 91 million.
