While the employees were released unharmed, the incident highlighted the persistent security challenges faced by agricultural inspectors operating in certain parts of Michoacan, a state that has been grappling with organized crime and cartel-related violence for years. The U.S. government had previously issued warnings about the risks to its personnel in the region.

Following the suspension, Mexican authorities, including the Michoacan state government and federal security forces, engaged in discussions with U.S. officials to ensure the safety of APHIS personnel. The partial resumption of operations indicates that agreements have been reached to enhance security measures for inspectors.
