US and Iran Resume Daily Airstrikes Over Strait of Hormuz

The United States and Iran have resumed daily airstrikes in a conflict over the Strait of Hormuz, with neither side showing signs of de-escalation. This renewed escalation highlights the limitations of President Donald Trump's strategy of relying on airstrikes to pressure Tehran. While the Trump administration has stated its openness to diplomacy, Iran has thus far refused to relinquish control over the critical oil shipping route in the Persian Gulf. The intensifying attacks have led to the collapse of an interim ceasefire, resulted in additional American troop casualties, and contributed to a rise in U.S. gasoline prices, presenting challenges for Republicans in the upcoming midterm elections.

Despite potential openings for talks, the situation could devolve into full-scale conflict. President Trump has issued a warning that for every American soldier killed by Iran, there will be a multiplied retaliation. Mona Yacoubian, director of the Middle East Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, commented that the current escalations reflect a "fundamental misreading of the Iranian psyche and a lack of learning" from past confrontations. She suggested that both sides are operating under the assumption that increased military action will break the deadlock and force the other party to yield, increasing the risk that diplomatic opportunities will become harder to pursue.

The Trump administration maintains that diplomatic channels remain open. Secretary of State Marco Rubio informed reporters that the U.S. is receptive to negotiations, noting that Iran sends signals of willingness to talk while simultaneously engaging in actions such as launching missiles and drones at ships in the Strait of Hormuz. Rubio emphasized that U.S. responses are dictated by Iran's behavior, particularly its actions in the vital waterway through which approximately one-fifth of global oil typically passes. The United States has consistently expressed its openness to a diplomatic resolution.
