UNRWA Chief Condemns Israeli Seizure of East Jerusalem Facility

The Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini, has condemned the Israeli seizure of a critical UNRWA facility in East Jerusalem. Lazzarini stated that the raid, which occurred on January 24, 2024, is part of a broader, coordinated campaign aimed at weakening and ultimately dismantling the agency. He asserted that this action is not an isolated incident but rather a deliberate effort to undermine the agency's ability to provide essential services to Palestinian refugees. The facility in question, located in the Shuafat refugee camp area, served as a vital hub for the distribution of food and other humanitarian aid to thousands of vulnerable individuals. Lazzarini emphasized that the seizure of this facility directly impacts the lives of refugees who rely on UNRWA for their basic needs, including food, shelter, and healthcare. He further articulated that such actions by Israeli authorities are not only a violation of international law but also serve to erode the fundamental rights of Palestinian refugees. The Commissioner-General highlighted that UNRWA has been operating in the region for over 70 years, providing indispensable support to millions of refugees across Gaza, the West Bank, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria. The agency's mandate, established by the UN General Assembly, is to provide assistance and protection to Palestine refugees until a just and lasting solution is found to their situation. Lazzarini expressed deep concern over the increasing pressure and hostility faced by UNRWA personnel and facilities in the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem. He warned that the continued obstruction and attacks on the agency's operations jeopardize the safety and well-being of both refugees and UNRWA staff. The condemnation comes amidst ongoing scrutiny of UNRWA following allegations made by Israel in January 2024 that some of its employees were involved in the October 7th attacks. These allegations have led several donor countries to suspend funding to the agency, further exacerbating its financial challenges. Lazzarini acknowledged the seriousness of the allegations and stated that UNRWA has launched a comprehensive investigation, including terminating contracts with several staff members implicated. However, he stressed that these allegations should not be used as a pretext to systematically dismantle an organization that is a lifeline for millions of refugees. The Commissioner-General called for an immediate cessation of all actions that impede UNRWA's work and urged the international community to uphold their responsibilities towards Palestine refugees. He reiterated that the agency remains committed to its mandate and will continue to advocate for the rights and dignity of refugees, despite the significant operational and political challenges it faces.
