Underpromise, overdeliver? Hands-on with the $24,950 Slate auto.

Slate Auto has exceeded initial performance expectations for its electric truck, a strategy reminiscent of Disneyland's approach to managing wait times. The company originally stated the entry-level battery would offer 180 miles (290 km) of range, but this has been increased to 205 miles (330 km). Similarly, the tow rating has been doubled from an initial 1,000 lbs (454 kg) to 2,000 lbs (907 kg). The load rating has also seen an improvement, rising from 1,400 lbs (635 kg) to 1,550 lbs (703 kg). This automotive startup's marketing has been characterized by a tongue-in-cheek style since the truck's unveiling a year ago. The leaked price of the base model at $24,950 last week has led to speculation about whether this was a deliberate guerrilla marketing tactic. Ars Technica received flights from San Francisco to Los Angeles and accommodation from Slate to test the vehicle, with Ars stating it does not accept paid editorial content.
