UN Mission Alleges Crimes Against Humanity in Iran

A United Nations fact-finding mission has concluded that Iranian security forces committed crimes against humanity during the violent crackdown on widespread protests that began in September 2022. The mission's findings, detailed in a report released on March 8, 2024, assert that the Iranian authorities' response to the demonstrations involved systematic and widespread acts of violence, including unlawful killings, arbitrary detentions, enforced disappearances, and torture. These crimes include murder, imprisonment or other severe deprivation of physical liberty, torture, rape, and other sexual violence, persecution against an identifiable group or collectivity on political grounds, enforced disappearance of persons, and other inhumane acts of a similar character intentionally causing great suffering, or serious injury to body or to mental or physical health. The UN Human Rights Council established the independent fact-finding mission in November 2022 to investigate alleged human rights violations in Iran related to the protests. The mission's mandate was to investigate alleged violations and abuses of human rights in the Islamic Republic of Iran, particularly concerning women and children. The report calls for accountability for those responsible for the violations and urges the international community to support efforts to ensure justice for the victims. It also recommends that Iran cooperate with international investigative mechanisms and implement reforms to prevent future abuses. The Iranian government has consistently denied allegations of systematic human rights abuses and has accused foreign powers of instigating the protests.
