UN chief urges AI companies to ‘come clean’ about the pollution they generate

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres urged artificial intelligence companies on Tuesday to disclose their environmental impact, including carbon pollution, water usage, and land use associated with powering their operations. Speaking at London Climate Action Week, Guterres proposed the AI Environmental Transparency Initiative, advocating for AI firms to measure and report the environmental footprint of their technology. This call for transparency comes amid growing concerns about the rapid expansion of data centers that support AI development and deployment. Guterres also called on AI companies to commit to powering their facilities with renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar, by 2030. He emphasized the need for "no more hidden costs" and for companies to take responsibility for their environmental impact. Major tech companies like Amazon and Google have made commitments to use cleaner energy sources, with some aiming for renewable power by the end of the decade, often utilizing solar and nuclear energy. However, the escalating demand for AI has led to increased greenhouse gas emissions from the burning of fossil fuels. Data centers globally currently draw approximately 30% of their electricity from coal, 27% from renewables, 26% from natural gas, and 15% from nuclear power, according to the International Energy Agency. Projections indicate that renewables will only meet about half of the growing demand in the next five years.
