UK Doubles Crime Officers to Combat Illegal Migration

The UK government has significantly intensified its efforts to combat human smuggling and illegal migration, more than doubling the number of crime agency officers deployed to the task over the past 18 months. Prime Minister Andy Burnham stated on a visit to the port of Dover that his administration would adopt a "relentless" approach to addressing small-boat crossings. This initiative builds upon existing work that has seen the National Crime Agency (NCA) officer count dedicated to this issue rise from 376 at the beginning of 2025 to nearly 800. Burnham emphasized the public's desire for a controlled border, stating, "The public don’t like the idea that the border looks like it’s not controlled." He further elaborated on the need to "bring back that control" while simultaneously "offer support for people who genuinely need it," reiterating his commitment to being "relentless."

Illegal migration has emerged as a significant political issue in the United Kingdom, contributing to the rise in support for Nigel Farage's Reform UK party. Farage's firm stance, which characterizes small boat arrivals as an "invasion" and advocates for their detention and deportation, has propelled his party to the forefront of opinion polls. Burnham acknowledged hearing these concerns directly from constituents, stating, "People want to see this issue addressed. I heard that on the doorsteps in Makerfield." However, he also stressed the importance of developing a system that provides "safe routes for people as well, because that also takes away the selling point of the gangs."

While the number of small-boat crossings has decreased substantially this year compared to 2025, approximately 2,000 individuals have crossed the English Channel since Burnham assumed the prime ministership on July 20. The provisional estimate for the year to date indicates 14,526 crossings, representing a 43% reduction from the previous year and a 14% decrease compared to the equivalent period in 2024. Prime Minister Burnham visited Dover's Joint Command Room on Sunday to observe the operational activities of the NCA and the Border Security Command in safeguarding UK shores. Concurrently, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood toured NCA offices in Stratford, London, informing reporters that she was "doing whatever it takes to secure the border." Mahmood indicated that government strategies are showing positive results, citing over 70,000 deportations that have occurred since the Labour party assumed power in 2024, marking an increase in such measures.
