UK to ban social media for kids under 16, may impose overnight curfews

The UK government announced on March 18, 2024, that it will ban social media access for individuals under the age of 16, with the regulations anticipated to be implemented in spring 2027. This prohibition will encompass popular platforms such as Snapchat, TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, and X. Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated that this measure represents a global first in banning social media for minors, aiming to "give kids their childhood back." Beyond the outright ban, the government plans to introduce comprehensive protections for those under 16, including "world-leading blocks on harmful functions such as livestreaming and stranger communication." These restrictions on livestreaming and direct contact with unknown individuals will also be enabled by default for 16- and 17-year-olds to mitigate a sudden exposure to these features upon turning 16. The new rules regarding livestreaming and stranger contact are expected to extend to various online services, including gaming platforms.
