UK staff at the foundation that runs Wikipedia seeks union recognition

Wikimedia Foundation (WMF) staff in the United Kingdom formally requested union recognition from management on Wednesday. The UK-based employees, who are organizing with the Office and Professional Employees International Union (OPEIU) Local 10, stated in a letter that recent organizational changes have heightened concerns regarding transparency, trust, and communication. This move follows a period of significant restructuring within the WMF, which supports the operations of Wikipedia and its related projects. The union drive aims to establish a formal collective bargaining agreement to address workplace issues and ensure employee representation in decision-making processes. The WMF has not yet publicly responded to the union's request for voluntary recognition.
