BDS Co-founder Urges UK to End All Trade With Israel

Omar Barghouti, a co-founder of the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement, has asserted that the United Kingdom has a legal and ethical imperative to terminate all trade with Israel, arguing that current measures are insufficient to address the ongoing situation in Gaza. Barghouti specifically criticized sanctions targeting individual Israeli settler groups or extremist ministers as a "smoke and mirrors cop-out and distraction." He contended that these actions divert attention from the UK's fundamental legal obligation under international law to cease all forms of support for Israel. This support, he elaborated, includes not only arms exports and trade deals but also academic relations that could "directly or indirectly enable Israel's illegal occupation" of Palestinian territories, namely Gaza, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem.

Barghouti's statement underscores the BDS movement's long-standing call for comprehensive economic and political pressure on Israel to end its occupation and alleged human rights violations. The movement, founded in 2005, advocates for non-violent means to achieve Palestinian rights, drawing parallels with the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa. The BDS movement's strategy involves boycotting Israeli goods and services, divesting from companies complicit in the occupation, and imposing sanctions on the Israeli state and its institutions.
