Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi Defends Demanding Work Culture, Citing Weekend Emails and High Performance Expectations

Dara Khosrowshahi, the CEO of Uber, a global ride-hailing and delivery giant valued at approximately $141 billion, has publicly detailed the company's demanding work culture. Speaking on the "Diary of a CEO" podcast, Khosrowshahi made it clear that Uber is not a place for employees seeking a relaxed work environment or minimal effort. He emphasized that individuals who "want to coast" will not find success at the company. Khosrowshahi's leadership philosophy is characterized by high expectations and a direct approach to performance management. "We're going to be really demanding," he stated. "If you're not performing, we're going to let you know. And if you don't fix it, we're going to push you out." This stringent approach was implemented when Khosrowshahi assumed the CEO role in 2017. At that time, Uber was facing significant financial challenges, incurring annual losses estimated to be between $2.5 billion and $3 billion. The company, which had experienced rapid growth and success in its early years, had become somewhat complacent. Khosrowshahi initiated a comprehensive strategic overhaul aimed at restoring profitability and operational efficiency. A key component of this turnaround strategy involved revamping the company's work culture and setting clear expectations for employee commitment, including engagement outside of traditional business hours. Khosrowshahi illustrated this expectation with a personal example: "Part of working hard is sending emails to the team on a Saturday. And if I don't get a response on Saturday, sending them an email on Sunday with a question mark. What's going on?" This rigorous management style appears to have yielded substantial financial results. Khosrowshahi highlighted that in the most recent fiscal year, Uber generated an impressive $9.8 billion in free cash flow, a stark contrast to its previous losses. While acknowledging that working at Uber is challenging and requires significant effort, Khosrowshahi also stressed that the company offers employees considerable agency, extensive learning opportunities, and the chance to make a tangible impact on a global scale. He summarized this by saying, "While you will have worked hard, you're going to have a great time. But don't come here if you want to coast." Khosrowshahi further elaborated on the foundational importance of work ethic, describing it as the most critical skill in life. He posited that professionals often become overly focused on meticulously planning their career paths, sometimes at the expense of cultivating the fundamental ability to work diligently and persistently. He believes that "life is about tradeoffs," implying that achieving significant success necessitates a willingness to invest considerable effort and time.
