Two U.S. Troops Killed in Jordan Attack; Iran Leader Mocks Trump

The U.S. military announced on Saturday that two service members were killed and one is missing after an Iranian attack on a base in Jordan on Friday. This marks the first U.S. troop deaths resulting from direct Iranian fire since the onset of the current conflict. Four other service members who were medically evacuated to Jordanian hospitals have since been discharged. Since the war's commencement, a total of 16 U.S. service members have been killed and over 430 have been wounded.

Hours before the attack, Iran's supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, warned of "unforgettable lessons" if the United States continues its attacks on the Islamic Republic. These remarks, broadcast on state television, also characterized President Donald Trump's signature as "worthless and invalid." These statements coincided with a negotiator's announcement that Tehran was suspending its commitments to an interim deal signed approximately one month prior, a deal intended to permanently end the fighting.

Khamenei's warnings extended beyond Iran itself, encompassing its armed proxies in the region, which he referred to as the "Axis of Resistance." The United States and Iran have been engaged in reciprocal strikes targeting infrastructure and military objectives. Their conflict has intensified around the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway that previously transported one-fifth of the world's crude oil, with the exchanges now threatening civilian populations and essential services, including desalination plants.

The U.S. Central Command reported early Saturday that its strikes, occurring for the seventh consecutive night, targeted "surveillance sites, military logistics infrastructure, underground weapons storage, and maritime capabilities." These actions come as the U.S. asserts that Iran has violated its commitments under the aforementioned interim deal.
