Twin Engine Teases New Mononoke Anime Project

Twin Engine has teased a new 'Mononoke' anime project, signaling an expansion of the supernatural franchise following the finale of its recent film trilogy. The announcement was made via a surprise teaser video that hints at new narrative directions for the series, which originated as a cult-favorite TV show in 2007. The franchise is known for its distinctive blend of avant-garde Japanese paper textures and psychological horror.

The new project introduces a third iteration of the Medicine Seller, the enigmatic protagonist. This character, referred to as the Medicine Seller of Ken, is depicted in a yellow and purple kimono and is voiced by Hirofumi Araki. This new incarnation follows the lineage of previous Medicine Sellers: Ri, the original protagonist from 'Ayakashi: Samurai Horror Tales' (2006) and the 'Mononoke' TV series (2007), voiced by Takahiro Sakurai, and Kon, the central figure of the recent film trilogy, voiced by Hiroshi Kamiya. According to the established lore, there are a total of 64 Medicine Sellers, each associated with one of 64 distinct Exorcism Swords.

The teaser trailer incorporates familiar franchise motifs alongside updated surreal visuals. It prominently features the Medicine Seller's exorcism sword and charms, suggesting the continuation of the series' supernatural elements. The animation style is described as leaning into the franchise's experimental roots while adopting a modernized color palette and pacing, indicating a fresh direction for 'Mononoke'. The film trilogy itself began in 2024, building upon the legacy of the original 2007 series.
