As the peak Labor Day travel period commences, airport security procedures at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), a major hub serving the New York City metropolitan area, are undergoing a significant technological upgrade. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has officially launched its new "e-gates" at EWR, introducing a system designed to expedite the passenger screening process by minimizing direct interaction with security personnel. These automated gates are currently operational within Terminal C and are exclusively available to select United Airlines passengers who have enrolled in the TSA PreCheck Touchless ID program.

Newark Liberty International Airport is positioned as one of the pioneering airports in the United States to trial this advanced security technology. This initiative follows an earlier pilot program initiated by the TSA in the summer at Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT), where similar automated gate technology was introduced. While the e-gates at Charlotte Douglas International Airport are accessible to all passengers holding TSA PreCheck membership, the eligibility criteria at Newark are more specific. At EWR, access is currently restricted to United Airlines flyers who have not only opted into the TSA PreCheck program but have also specifically registered for the TSA PreCheck Touchless ID program. This biometric program is designed to allow registered passengers to navigate security checkpoints without the need to physically present their identification or boarding passes. Instead, the system captures a passenger's photograph and performs an automated comparison against passport information already stored in the system.

The operational process for utilizing the e-gates at Newark involves passengers entering a designated booth. Within this booth, a photograph is taken, and if the biometric verification is successful, the translucent gates typically open within a matter of seconds. This effectively allows travelers to bypass the traditional step of handing over their identification and boarding pass to a TSA officer. Following passage through the e-gate, passengers and their carry-on luggage will proceed through the standard security screening procedures, which include the inspection of bags by X-ray machines. To be eligible for this streamlined process at Newark, passengers must be flying with United Airlines and must have successfully enrolled in the TSA PreCheck Touchless ID program.
