Trump’s White House Ballroom May Cost Taxpayers $300 Million After All, Leaked Projections Show

Leaked projections indicate that the White House ballroom project, championed by former President Donald Trump, is now estimated to cost $600 million, a $200 million increase from earlier projections. Taxpayers are expected to cover more than half of this total cost, contradicting Trump's repeated claims that the project would be entirely privately funded. Initially, Trump estimated the ballroom's cost at $200 million, a figure he later doubled. He publicly stated on March 31 that "taxpayer-free" construction meant "no taxpayer putting up 10 cents." However, a cost estimate from Clark Construction, the firm hired for the project, revealed the $600 million price tag. The contractor reportedly informed the Trump administration that approximately $307 million, or 51% of the total cost, would be funded by taxpayer dollars through the U.S. Secret Service, the White House Military Office, and the Executive Residence. The remaining $293 million, or 48%, was projected to come from private sources. The Washington Post obtained these leaked documents, which also show that by the time Trump made his "taxpayer-free" remarks, his administration had already authorized over a dozen payments totaling tens of millions of dollars in public funds to the contractor. The 90,000-square-foot construction began in October 2025, with the Trump administration designating it a national security priority, a push reportedly intensified after a security incident at the White House Correspondents' Dinner in April.
