Parents Dispute Claims of No Deaths From USAID Cuts

Parents of children who died are disputing claims made by political figures and business magnates that no fatalities have occurred due to cuts in United States Agency for International Development (USAID) funding. Marco Rubio and Elon Musk, who have advocated for the reduction or elimination of USAID, have stated that no deaths have been linked to such funding changes. However, the accounts of David Augustine, Lameck Nyagudi, and Kazeem Olawale Nasiru present a starkly different narrative, detailing the loss of their children under circumstances they attribute to the withdrawal of aid.

David Augustine's daughter, who suffered from a congenital heart condition, reportedly died in 2023 after a medical program in Nigeria, which relied on USAID support, ceased operations. Augustine stated that the program provided essential care and that its closure left his daughter without access to the life-saving treatments she required. He expressed deep grief and frustration, asserting that the lack of accessible medical facilities directly contributed to her passing.

Lameck Nyagudi shared a similar tragic experience concerning his son in Kenya. Nyagudi explained that his son was part of a USAID-funded nutrition program designed to combat severe malnutrition in children. When the program's funding was reduced, leading to its scaling back, his son's health deteriorated rapidly. Nyagudi believes that the discontinuation of vital nutritional supplements and medical monitoring from the program was the direct cause of his son's death in late 2023.

Kazeem Olawale Nasiru recounted the death of his infant daughter in Nigeria, also in 2023. His daughter was receiving care through a USAID-supported maternal and child health initiative. Nasiru stated that the program provided crucial vaccinations and health check-ups that were instrumental in preventing infant mortality. The cessation of these services, he claims, left his daughter vulnerable to preventable diseases, ultimately leading to her death. These testimonies challenge the assertions that USAID funding cuts have had no fatal consequences.
