U.S. District Judge Roy Altman agreed to temporarily halt the disclosure order while he reviews an amended complaint filed by Trump's legal team. This amended complaint aims to narrow the lawsuit's focus to reputational damage, thereby potentially avoiding the extensive financial disclosures that Trump appears reluctant to make. Trump initiated the lawsuit in December, alleging that the BBC's editing of a speech he delivered on January 6, 2021, prior to the Capitol attack, was misleading. He specifically contends that the British broadcaster omitted a portion of his speech where he urged supporters to demonstrate peacefully. The lawsuit seeks $5 billion for defamation and an additional $5 billion for unfair trade practices. The BBC, a publicly funded broadcaster, has issued an apology to Trump regarding the edit but maintains that it did not defame him. This controversy reportedly led to the resignations of the BBC's top executive and its head of news.

In his order on Thursday, Judge Altman indicated that he found Trump's argument regarding the amended complaint's potential to eliminate the need for financial disclosures to be "compelling." The BBC, however, contests this assertion. Previously, a magistrate judge based in Miami, Enjoliqué Lett, had ordered Trump to begin releasing financial records from his family's businesses by Thursday. This legal battle is one of several actions Trump has taken against media coverage he deems unfavorable during his presidency, employing legal challenges, executive actions, and public statements.
