Billionaire Ambassador's Yacht Sparks Venice Protest

Hundreds of protesters marched in Venice on Friday to demonstrate against the arrival of American ambassador Tilman Fertitta's luxury super yacht. The activists expressed disapproval of the display of American wealth and influence, particularly at a time when some Italians perceive the Trump administration as disrupting the post-World War II international order. Protesters clashed briefly with riot police as they approached the vessel, chanting "Shame!" and carrying signs with slogans like "Venezia non si USA" (Venice is not to be used) and "Make America Read Again."

Fertitta, a hospitality mogul, arrived in Venice aboard his super yacht as part of a "coastal diplomacy" tour celebrating the 250th anniversary of American independence. The tour, which spans 13 Italian coastal regions, is intended to highlight shared history, economic partnerships, and cultural bonds between the U.S. and Italy, according to a social media post by Fertitta. Police boats and a significant police presence were observed around the yacht and the protest route, indicating the security measures in place for the ambassador's visit.

Fertitta declined an interview request regarding the tour and the protest but issued a statement affirming his respect for freedom of speech and the right to peaceful protest. The protest highlighted tensions between local sentiment and the perceived extravagance of diplomatic visits, with some residents finding the presence of such a large and opulent vessel in a historic and environmentally sensitive area to be "gross."
