President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that his proposed memorial arch, intended to stand between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery, will be re-envisioned as a "top grade military complex." This new designation means the structure will be equipped to host drones and snipers, with dedicated areas on both the roof and plaza for their deployment. Additionally, the complex will feature substantial storage capacity for ammunition. Trump stated this conversion is in response to a "strong request" from the military, aiming to enhance national security capabilities. The proposed arch is a 250-foot-tall (76-meter) structure slated for a traffic-heavy circle near the Memorial Bridge, a key connector between Washington D.C. and northern Virginia.

This development marks a continuation of Trump's approach to public works, where initiatives for beautification are also framed with defensive and national security justifications. Previously, Trump had referred to a new White House ballroom as a "military complex" necessary for national security. The Pentagon has indicated it possesses no information regarding the arch's military repurposing beyond the president's public statements. The arch project, like other initiatives pursued by the Trump administration, faces ongoing legal challenges. Although the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts, whose members were appointed by Trump, granted early approval, a lawsuit was filed by a group of three veterans and an architectural historian. This group contends that congressional approval is a prerequisite for the arch's construction.

The planned military complex is part of a broader agenda by the Republican president to leave a significant architectural and infrastructural legacy in Washington D.C. Other notable projects include the aforementioned White House ballroom, the renaming and renovation of the Kennedy Center, refurbishment of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, and a redevelopment of a golf course in East Potomac Park. The golf course project, in particular, has drawn criticism for potentially limiting public access to popular running and biking paths. The groundbreaking for the arch was originally scheduled to occur at an unspecified date, but the project's trajectory is now subject to these evolving plans and legal hurdles.
