President Donald Trump has publicly and sharply criticized U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro's assessment that damage to the iconic Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool was primarily the result of shoddy construction, a conclusion that contradicts Trump's own persistent claims of vandalism. Pirro's office, in a significant court filing on Friday, moved to drop criminal charges against David Hearn, a former Olympian, who had been accused of deliberately damaging the pool. The Reflecting Pool had recently undergone a renovation in anticipation of the nation's 250th birthday celebration, a significant national milestone.

In a social media posting, President Trump acknowledged that "there may have been some contractor difficulty" associated with the installation of a new pool liner. However, he unequivocally maintained his stance that "the major damage was caused by VANDALS!" He explicitly stated, "I disagree 100% with Jeanine Pirro, the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, on the Reflecting Pool." This public disagreement marks an embarrassing setback for the Department of Justice, which had previously aligned with Trump's narrative and had presented the prosecution of Hearn as a necessary measure to ensure accountability for damage to a prominent Washington landmark, a project that held particular significance for the President.

Despite the evidence presented by Pirro's office, Trump continued to allege on Saturday that vandals were responsible for the majority of the damage, without offering any new or concrete evidence to support his assertion. The government lawyers' detailed 20-page court filing on Friday elaborated on the findings. It revealed that additional documents provided by the Department of the Interior, subsequent to Hearn's indictment, indicated that the damage was a consequence of a botched installation by a contractor. The filing also cited "the rush to complete the project prior to events associated with the America 250 celebration in the weeks surrounding Independence Day 2026," suggesting that the accelerated timeline contributed to the issues. Furthermore, a recent visual inspection of the pool uncovered damage distributed throughout its structure, including in the central area. Prosecutors argued that this widespread damage, particularly in the middle of the pool, made it improbable that a vandal would have been able to cause such extensive harm, especially by attempting to peel the lining. Hearn, a former Olympic canoeist, had been accused of pulling up a two-foot square section of the pool's lining. The court filing concluded that, "Given all of this newly discovered information, it is difficult to attribute the widespread damage to the actions of the defendant."
