Trump Admin Canceled $7.6B Clean Energy Projects Over State Politics

The Trump administration has acknowledged in court documents that it canceled $7.6 billion in grants for hundreds of clean energy projects "based solely on the political identity of the grant recipient's state." This statement directly contradicts previous assertions by Energy Secretary Chris Wright and other officials who claimed the projects were terminated due to inadequate advancement of national energy needs or other investment-related issues. The 16 affected states had voted for Democrat Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election.

Democrats and environmental groups have criticized the administration's actions, viewing the court filing as an admission that the federal government was "weaponized" to eliminate jobs and penalize citizens based on their political affiliations. Representatives Marcy Kaptur of Ohio and Sen. Patty Murray of Washington, both prominent Democrats on the House and Senate Appropriations committees, stated that the administration terminated nearly 300 energy projects "for no reason other than the fact that the states they were in did not vote for the president in the 2024 election." They characterized this action as "outright un-American" and an "abuse of power" that harms working families.

The Energy Department had initially announced in October that 321 funding awards across 223 projects were terminated. At that time, the department stated that a review found the projects "did not adequately advance the nation's energy needs or were not economically viable." These cancellations were part of broader efforts by President Donald Trump to reduce funding for climate programs and clean energy initiatives. The admission in court documents now provides a different justification for these significant funding cuts.
