TreeSize Ends Perpetual License Support Without Subscription

JAM Software, the developer of the disk space analysis tool TreeSize, has announced a policy change that will cease support and updates for perpetual licenses once their maintenance period concludes, unless users opt for a subscription. This shift has caused dissatisfaction among existing perpetual license holders who are discovering that extending support now necessitates subscribing to the software they previously owned outright.

Since 2025, JAM Software has been progressively moving its TreeSize product line towards subscription-based models. Currently, perpetual licenses are exclusively available for personal use, and these include 12 months of updates, technical support, and access to older versions and the license itself. Customers also have the option to extend this support period.

Hendrik Christ, product manager for TreeSize, stated to Ars Technica that the company "has no plans to discontinue the sale of perpetual licenses for TreeSize Personal." However, for users with existing perpetual licenses whose maintenance periods are expiring, the path to continued support and updates now generally involves transitioning to a subscription service. This means users who previously purchased a perpetual license may need to pay recurring fees to receive ongoing assistance and software improvements for a product they already possess the right to use.
